Deion Sanders: “I’d be a fool” not to take Power 5 offer

Deion Sanders won’t rule out a move to a Power Five FBS school while remaining committed to Jackson State.

Sanders told 60 Minutes’ Jon Wertheim he’d “consider it” if a Power Five official asked about a vacancy.

“I’ll listen. Up, “saying “I’d be stupid not to.”

The latest controversy surrounding Sanders’ post-game handshake with Alabama State head coach Eddie Robinson Jr. gave the Hall of Famer the chance to continue debunking his detractors.

Sanders “ain’t SWAC,” Robinson said to reporters, prompting the great cornerback to retort:

“I don’t like coming back the next day and having someone call me to apologize and set things right. Not at all, please. You intended the mess. Out of all the comments, the one that said I wasn’t SWAC sort of concerned me. Who is? Today I have time. Unless I am SWAC, who is SWAC? Unless I am SWAC, who is SWAC?”

Early on, it was simple to harbor doubts about the union of Sanders and Jackson State. He had no prior college coaching experience, and Robinson’s scathing statement highlighted the fact that he had no long-standing connections to HBCU football.

Was this a sincere effort to improve HBCU football, or was it only a means for Sanders to get coaching experience before leaving for greater opportunities?

The experiment has thus far performed better than anyone could have anticipated.

Jackson State is off to a 6-0 start in 2022 after finishing 11-2 in 2021. Sanders has also improved the Tigers’ appeal as a destination for elite high school athletes. In 2021, they signed 5-star cornerback Travis Hunter and attracted five 4-star prospects.

Naturally, Sanders’ response to Wertheim’s query was a case of stating the obvious. Even while the 55-year-old is content with his life at Jackson State, it will be quite tempting to accept a prestigious Power Five position in the future.

Currently accessible schools include Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, Nebraska, Arizona State, and Colorado, each with unique selling factors.

Let’s assume that, after another year or two, Florida State is still floundering under Mike Norvell and is seeking for a successor. Sanders would undoubtedly be one of the Seminoles’ top choices on their short list.

Once the 2022 season is complete, the Power Five offers are sure to follow, and Sanders may then find himself at a crossroads.
